SHION:

The sun had set by the time we stopped for the night, and everyone was too travel weary to even eat.

Sesshomaru found a nice small clearing a little ways from the road, with grass so soft that when we all laid down Ai, Rin and Jaken fell asleep instantly.

Usually, the six of us would all snuggle together around a fire, but not only was everyone too exhausted to bother. It was also kind of awkward. Mainly because... that girl... was curled up with Ai in her arms.

I know her name, of course. It's Rin. It's... a beautiful name. And she's... beautiful.

Ah. But. Nevermind. That's not important!

Even Asagi – who hadn't done anything but sit on top of Lord Sesshomaru's two-headed dragon demon thing, was tired. When AuUn lay down on its stomach, she carefully slid off the saddle and limped her way over to Rin and Ai.

I, myself, couldn't even keep my eyes open for very long. We hadn't traveled like this in a while. When we traveled it was usually all fun and games. But I guess Lord Sesshomaru had his own agenda. He didn't need us kids tagging along. Probably wanted to get rid of us as fast as he could.

I laid my head down, rubbing my face in the soft green grass. You could tell that Winter was on its way by the chill in the air, though thankfully it hadn't yet turned the ground brown and scratchy.

Closing my eyes, I wondered what Asagi had planned for us after this little trip with the Great Lord. Perhaps... we'd go down south? Find... somewhere... warm...

CLUNK

My eyes flew open, and my head popped up from the ground. The moon was farther across the sky, so I must have been sleeping for some time. Beside me knelt Lord Sesshomaru – his figure lit by the fire he was feeding in front of us. I blinked, and then I scooted away so I wasn't within arm's length of him anymore.

He tossed another log into the embers, and the fire slowly started to grow again. I raised an eyebrow at him. I didn't think a big strong demon like Lord Sesshomaru would get cold. But then... why else would he build a fire? Unless... it was for...

I looked around. Spread around in various poses, my family and the others slept soundly. Comfortable and warm.

I returned my eyes to the dog demon. He seemed so bored by the flames and sparks of the fire, yet he wouldn't look away. And then, he spoke... and I nearly jumped out of my skin.

"Why do you fear the world, little sheep?"

Given that I was the only one awake, and the only half-sheep demon within a thousand miles of this place, I assumed he was talking to me. My mouth opened to answer, but the pounding of my heart in my ears made it impossible. Finally I closed my mouth.

"You are right to fear me," still he stared at the fire, "But do not waste your time on the rest of the world."

Was he... telling me not to be afraid? Was this some sort of backwards way for him to tell me everything was going to be okay? How strange...

We sat there in the dark for some time. Him watching the fire. Me watching him. After what seemed like an hour, he spoke again. As is my nature, I jumped slightly when he did.

"Tell me something," it sounded more like a command than a question, "Are you children truly from the island called 'Horai'? The one once ruled by the four war gods?"

I didn't even bother opening my mouth this time. I knew I wasn't going to answer. Still, I at least nodded.

His bright gold irises looked over at me from the corner of his eye, registering my nod. For a moment he did nothing. Finally, he closed his eyes.

I felt like I had done something wrong, and that scared me. Then he straightened up to his full height, and I had to crane my neck back to keep my eyes on his face. He drew in a long breath and sighed, opening his eyes to look over at me.

I couldn't read this expression. It was something like sadness, but with irritation and annoyance wrapped in there as well. Plus a bit of boredom, a pinch of exhaustion and a finishing touch of acceptance. I couldn't decide which was more frightening. His anger from earlier today when he had sliced those demons to ribbons in the middle of the road or the complicated and eerie look he was giving me now.

"Return to your sleep," he told me, turning away to leave.

I watched his back, growing smaller and smaller. For whatever reason, I felt the sudden urge to shout, "Wait!" But that would be totally ridiculous.

He stopped.

Oh crud. I really had shouted.

"I- I... uh..." Come on, Shion! The stuttering is just going to make him mad!

I dropped my eyes to my lap, where I twirled my fingers together nervously and murmured into my chest, "Th- Thank you..."

Good thing Lord Sesshomaru had super hearing. He had heard me. But didn't reply.

And then he disappeared into the darkness.

I wondered if this was what love felt like.

We were walking again. As we were always walking. Walking. Resting. Walking. Walking. Resting. Walking. So on and so forth.

And I couldn't help it. I was always staring.

She had such pretty hair. And such pretty eyes. She danced around like there was this bright light inside of her that could chase away any shadows. And since I'm scared of the dark and all...

She made me want to smile all the time. Which made me blush all the time. Which made her smile. Which made me smile. Which made me blush.

But I finally stopped blushing when we reached a very dangerous and rickety-looking bridge. One of the ones made of wood planks tied together with old rope. And it was really long. And dangerous. And rickety-looking. And Lord Sesshomaru started walking across it.

The demon - Au Un, I think it was called - took one look at the bridge and shook both it's heads. Rin smiled that smile of hers and nodded. "All right," she told the demon, tying back it's reins so they wouldn't be in the way, "We'll see you on the other side."

Au Un took a few steps backwards. "Oh," Rin tilted to the side slightly and looked at Asagi, "You should hold on." Asagi blinked, then grabbed on to the saddle just in time for the demon to jump up and soar across the cavern, over the bridge. Lord Sesshomaru didn't even look up.

With Asagi landing safely on the other side and Lord Sesshomaru already halfway across the bridge, Rin jogged along to catch up with him, wobbling the bridge. But Sesshomaru didn't seem to notice. Or break his balance. Jaken went after her, yelling about how troublesome she was making it to cross. Then Ai - the bravest of us all - followed after him.

I looked at Moegi, who shrugged and headed across. And the twins, who I guess knew there was no way I was getting on that death bridge, pushed me forward onto it, and blocked me from getting off. With no where else to go, I hesitantly moved forward.

There was one incident, but the twins and I were so far back from the girls and Sesshomaru that all we could do was watch it happen.

Somehow Ai had gotten ahead of Lord Sesshomaru - and Rin ahead of her. There was a small cracking sound as Rin was walking, and then a board snapped when Ai stepped on it behind her. She went falling through. We were screaming. Ai was screaming. We were screaming louder.

But Sesshomaru caught her. Somehow he had stepped forward, dropped to one knee and reached his arm down through the hole all the way to his shoulder - just in time to grab Ai. All in the blink of an eye. He saved her. Faster than any of us had been able to see.

Slowly, he pulled her up by her wrist, through the hole and set her on an unbroken plank in front of him. But it was too late. Ai was sensitive, and she felt like she had almost died. In tears, she scrambled up onto him, grabbing fistfuls of his shirt and refusing to let go.

He seemed annoyed. Not really angry. But annoyed. Still, he brought his arm up for her to sit on, and stood. She stopped crying when he continued walking. And then he set her down safely on the ground at the other end of the bridge.

I took a long time to cross the bridge. And when we reached the part Ai had broken, I crawled across it. Sesshomaru seemed more annoyed with me than he had been with Ai. Even a little angry. Definitely annoyed.

Finally, I scrambled onto the cliff's edge, panting like crazy. That bridge had been by far one of the scariest things I had ever had to cross. I hoped there weren't anymore bridges in this journey. For Lord Sesshomaru's sake. And mine. And his.

I looked up at him, standing nearby where I had collapsed - glad to be on solid ground again. He seemed bored. And then he rolled his eyes and walked away - it was the first normal action I had seen from him. Almost, human, even.

I got to my feet and followed after the rest of my family, who were following him.

-
If Kohaku had died in Inuyasha: The Final Act, my next in line for Rin was Shion. I know they've never actually met, but neither have Gaara and Hinata from Naruto, and I'll still crack-ship that to my dying breath.

Shion's was a fun one to write. Mostly filler. But I played around with the fun and the boring and the dangerous things that actually happen on a journey through the feudal era. Not to mention, Shion's writing style. He has this habit of repeating his thoughts. In case you didn't notice. That he repeats his thoughts. At the end of paragraphs. Because he does. Repeat his thoughts.

LoL.
